How to...measure and cut fabric with video demonstration

You know what pattern you want to make...

You've bought all your fabric...

Now to cut...!

Cutting into a new fabric can be the scariest part of making a quilt, especially if there was only just enough left on the bolt for your project and you can't get anymore of it!

Knowing how to measure and cut fabric can be frustrating when you are first learning to quilt. Using a rotary cutter can be dangerous if you are not careful and all those markings on the ruler confusing. And how do you find a straight edge to start cutting?

Take a look at my video for a demonstration of straightening and

cutting strips of fabric (these strips were being used in a Log Cabin Quilt, but the principal is the same for different size strips of fabric).

Some more tips:

Use a comfortable rotary cutter

If you are able to, try out a few to find one that you feel comfortable with. Check out reviews. Ask for suggestions in social media groups.

Take notice of the markings on your ruler

Some rulers have solid lines, some have dotted lines, some slip all over the place, some have 'grip' to help it stay put, some have an extra 1/2" that knock your measurements off... Make sure you know your ruler so you can measure accurately.

Measure twice, cut once

At least twice.

Don't worry if you make a mistake

It's only fabric.

If it's a small mistake but you don't have enough of the same fabric left use a different fabric, either one that is similar enough that no-one will notice (only you have to know) or use a fabric that compliments the original and make a feature of it. Your mistake is now a Unique Design Feature!

If you completely mess up the cutting put it to one side and when you feel better find another fabric and start again measure twice, cut once!!! Once you've made your quilt go back and use your original fabric in another quilt.

Measure twice, cut once

I won't say it again.

Don't struggle

If you are not getting along with cutting fabric, try different equipment. If you still don't like this part there are plenty of companies that are making dies to cut fabric. This way a machine can do the cutting for you, the only limitations are the size and shapes of the dies available.

Measure twice, cut once

I lied! (Sorry)

Happy stitching!
